Sniper/Spotter relationship
Me and the old man were discussing the relationship between shooters and spotters on several different levels. We have shot together since we have been shooting. We have our own commands as far as range safety and our own parlance when it comes to spotting shots. Nowadays, we are used to firing with everyone from a true professional marksman to a dipshit who wants to shoot a trashcan on the range.
Well the conversation progressed. I'm attending Boomershoot this year, barring any kind of gastrointestinal meltdown. My position partner is Kirk of Limpidity. We've never shot together or even met, but we will be spotting one another for three days. Full circle argument: Are there universal commands and prompts that I should learn? Or him, or both? As this is an eight hour event, I would like to be as well orchestrated as possible, and since we've never spotted for each other before, any recommendation would be welcome.
This leads into a military question: What is the relationship between a military spotter and sniper? Do they trade off positions or is the spotter always such? Does the spotter follow up on targets in the case of a miss? Also, is the spotter positioned laterally to the shooter or does he try to follow boresight by standing behind the shooter?
Questions. Sorry. The closer we get to Boomershoot the more obsessed I will get about this. Ask anybody I know. It's four months off and it's all I can talk about.

Since you are attending the Precision Rifle Clinic you needn't worry about this at all. The instructor, Gene Econ, will educate you on all the questions you asked. The terms used and how to describe where you are shooting etc will all be taken care of before you start shooting. Ideally the spotter will be directly behind and slightly above the shooter. The spotter will be using a spotting scope and NOT a rifle. The shooter and spotter will take turns in their respective positions.
As for a military team--I'm not one to know. Ask Gene during the clinic if you are still interested.
Oh and another thing... I'm glad someone else is obsessing about Boomershoot 2005. About 90% of my waking hours this weekend were dealing with it. Check out my blog postings for today.

Can your spotter read bullet trace? Can you shoot well enough so that it matters if he does? Does the rifle shoot 1 MOA? 2 MOA? Got enough of the same consistent ammuntion to do the job?
Good spotting can be taught...but someone has to teach it. Takes working together.
